Argentina's Secretary of Industry and Foreign Trade Miguel Peirano has stipulated that 75% of Argentinean footwear imports will come from other Mercosur-member countries.
This is good news for Brazil, the main Mercosur exporter of footwear to Argentina. Managing director of the Brazilian Association of Footwear Manufacturers (Abicaçados) Heitor Klein estimated that at least 90% of sales through the new ruling will be made by Brazil. This will increase annual shoe exports to Argentina from 13.9 million pairs to 15.5 million pairs.
At the moment, Argentina's imports of Brazilian footwear are controlled by a non-automatic license regime whereby the local government manages the volumes that enter the country. Mr Klein believes that the new market percentage system is more practical than the license regime.
