Brazilian footwear manufacturer Alpargatas is to set up office in
New York by the end of the year. Director-president Marcio Utsch said, “This is part of the company's internationalisation process involving annual investments of $10 million to put the marketing strategy and brand publicity underway in the American market.”

Mr Utsch also said that the majority of the 16 million pairs exported by the company every year are rubber sandals, mainly from the Havaianas range. He did not reveal the company’s annual US sales growth forecast.

Marcio Kawassaki, analyst for local brokerage agency Fator Corretora, said that the volumes currently being exported to the US are very small by American standards and predicted that sales could increase by up to three-fold.

The profit margin is also expected to be improved as the American consumer will pay up to $20 for a pair of Havavianas flip-flops, a much higher figure than in the Brazilian market.
