Growth-Link to start production in Tamil Nadu

According to local media, the government of Tamil Nadu and the Hong Kong-based Growth-Link Overseas Company have signed an MoU in the presence of Tamil Nadu chief minister Mr Karunanidhi to set up a special economic zone in the state with an investment of Rs3,000 million ($60 million) for footwear manufacture.

Growth-Link, a subsidiary of Feng-Tay, Taiwan, and its group of companies has come forward to establish the SEZ on a 275-acre site in the SIPCOT complex in Cheyyar, Tiruvannamalai district. Feng-Tay has been manufacturing athletic shoes, including the Nike brand, as well as other types of footwear. It runs four manufacturing units in China and Vietnam with a total production capacity of 50 million pairs of footwear per year.

Growth-Link director Peter Nickerson hoped production would start by the end of 2007 or the beginning of 2008. The initial production capacity of the SEZ would be 200,000 pairs of footwear a month, to increase to 800,000 pairs.
