The shoe industry of Leon, Mexico, has been boosted by sales to Guatemala. Footwear manufacturers from the area reportedly sell an average of $800,000 to the neighbouring country and representatives from the raw material and component sectors who recently participated in the Expo Calzado show in Guatemala were satisfied with the trade situation.

Mexico's National Association of Suppliers to the Footwear Industry (ANPIC) took part in this event for the fourth consecutive year together with a small group of suppliers from Leon: Solder de México (adhesives); Typ de México (finishing products and dyestuffs); Hilos Hernán (threads); Dimosa (shoe machinery); Plásticos Otgamo (ribbons and synthetic sandals). These exhibitors expect sales of $500,000 short-term and $2 million long-term.

ANPIC also signed agreements with the organisers of Expo Calzado, Guatemala's Union of Footwear and Related Product Manufacturers. One of the agreements ensures that ANPIC will provide exhibition space to Guatemalan exhibitors at the 'Chapín Pavilion' at the Mexican show held in Leon and the Association has offered to charter a plane straight from Guatemala to Leon to make it easier for these exhibitors to participate.

Guatemala manufactures 15 million pairs of shoes per year, mainly children's and casual styles, and it is the fourth largest export market for shoes made in Leon. Every year, Leonese manufacturers export approximately 107,000 pairs to the Central American country at an average price of $7.43.
