The Brazilian Ministry of Development has disclosed that the 2004 agreements concerning limited shoe exports to Argentina will not be renewed and it has requested that Argentina lifts the import restrictions imposed on Brazilian goods. Such restrictions were applied in order to assist in the recovery of Argentina's industry.
The ministry will not be renewing the agreements because, although while in force they benefited the industry, they also left the door open for goods from other countries, such as China. Ivan Ramalho, managing secretary at the ministry said, “Within the new scenario of growth of Argentina's industry, there is no reason to limit imports from another Mercosur-member country.”
The agreement accepted by Brazilian shoe manufacturers in 2004 which limited exports to Argentina to 13 million pairs per year expired in June and no new restrictions will be accepted.
