According to local media, the South African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (Sactwu) has announced that workers in the footwear industry are to receive a 5% wage increase and this has been agreed by employer organisations, the SA Footwear and Leather Industries’ Association, the Association of Small and Medium Manufactures of Footwear and Allied Products and two unions, Sactwu and the National Union of Leather and Allied Workers. The agreement will affect approximately 11,400 workers in 148 footwear companies across the country and is set to be implemented in the period July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007.
