Indonesian government to assist footwear industry
According to local media reports, the Indonesian government has pledged to make efforts to eliminate the problems affecting the footwear industry and to help increase promotion overseas. As a result, President Yudhoyono expects the industry to become a major job provider in the country.
The industry currently employs around 400,000 and local footwear makers are hopeful of greater export opportunities following anti-dumping legislation. Exports are expected to increase by at least 20% this year to $1.8 billion and some reports even forecast that the figure could even double by 2008 if the European market can be fully tapped and if there is sufficient investment in the industry.
