Pakistan mulls anti-dumping duties on Chinese footwear

07/04/2006

Pakistan’s government is said to be closely monitoring imports of Chinese goods, including footwear, into the domestic market and is considering the possibility of imposing anti-dumping duties. The case for imposing duties will be presented before the National Tariff Commission (NTC).

Humayun Akhtar Khan, Federal Minister for Commerce stated that most of the cottage industries in Pakistan, including the footwear sector, are facing tough competition from Chinese products. However he stressed that as China is a member of WTO there is need for solid proof of dumping before any protective duties can be imposed.

Despite concerns over Chinese footwear, Mr Khan stated that Pakistan is still likely to achieve its export target for the next financial year.
