Carbon-captured EVA reaches one million pairs with On

Swiss sportswear brand On has launched the Cloud X 5 featuring a midsole made with CleanCloud, an EVA foam technology that uses captured carbon emissions as a raw material.

The launch marks the first time the company has scaled an EVA midsole made from captured CO2 emissions to more than one million pairs, four years ahead of its original target.

CleanCloud uses captured industrial carbon emissions combined with renewable energy-derived green hydrogen to produce e-naphtha, which is then used to create EVA pellets for midsole production.

On said the resulting foam delivers the same cushioning and performance characteristics as conventional fossil-based EVA, while a life cycle assessment found the technology provides more than 80% lower modelled carbon impact compared with traditional EVA production.

The company developed the technology with chemical industry partners, including Infinium Energy and Borouge International, and plans to introduce lower-carbon material alternatives across more footwear styles in the future.
