Last surviving Russell & Bromley stores have now closed

After almost 150 years of making and selling high-quality shoes in the UK, Russell & Bromley closed the doors of the last of its remaining stores in early July.

The company was still being run by the founding family at the start of this year, but in January it announced that it had entered administration.

Major retail group Next emerged as a buyer of some Russell & Bromley assets, including its three most profitable stores. But Next did not want the company’s remaining 33 stores and a closure programme that began right away has reached its conclusion now.

Around 400 Russell & Bromley employees have lost their jobs.

Administrator, Interpath, said the company had faced falling sales, rising operating costs and a high fixed-cost base.
