Prada responds to backlash with Kolhapuri collaboration

Italian luxury fashion brand Prada has announced plans to launch a limited-edition footwear collection inspired by traditional Indian Kolhapuri sandals, following criticism earlier this year over the use of similar designs at a Milan fashion show.

The group has signed a memorandum of understanding with state-backed leather development bodies in Maharashtra and Karnataka to produce 2,000 pairs of the sandals locally. The collection is scheduled to go on sale in February 2026 across around 40 Prada stores worldwide and online.

Prada said the project will combine local Indian craftsmanship with its own manufacturing techniques and will include training programmes for artisans. Head of corporate social responsibility Lorenzo Bertelli said the initiative aims to support traditional manufacturing and raise awareness of Kolhapuri chappals. Each pair is expected to retail at about €800.
