Portugal’s tanneries boost footwear supply

Portuguese tannery exports rose 5.8% year on year to €81 million by September 2025, supporting the supply of high-quality leather for the domestic footwear industry, according to APICCAPS.

Spain remained the top destination despite a 4.6% decline to €17 million, while shipments to Italy increased by 8.7% to €13 million and exports to France grew 31.2% to €11 million.

APICCAPS said the growth reflects recovering external demand and ongoing investment in production modernisation, ensuring leather meets international quality and sustainability standards. President Luís Onofre said: “Leather is undoubtedly the best raw material on the market.”

The association highlighted that stronger tannery exports strengthen the footwear sector by securing reliable access to premium leather, helping Portuguese manufacturers remain competitive globally.
