Tod’s executives investigated over labour exploitation
Italian prosecutors are investigating three Tod’s executives and the company itself for alleged exploitation of Chinese subcontractors, citing violations in working hours, wages, safety, hygiene, and housing, according to a court document seen by news agency AFP. Authorities say the company lacked effective controls, outsourced audits without acting on findings, and generated profits from underpaid labour.

The investigation involves 53 workers across six subcontractors, with allegations including excessively long working days, unpaid wages, and physical abuse at one site. Prosecutors describe Tod’s organisational deficiencies as deliberate rather than negligent.

A court hearing on a previous request to suspend Tod’s advertising is scheduled for December 3. Italy’s top court recently rejected a request to place the company under judicial administration. Tod’s said it is reviewing the new allegations.

Founder Diego Della Valle defended the company, stressing its ethical standards and warning that such investigations could harm “Made in Italy” brands. Several other Italian luxury labels, including Loro Piana, have faced similar scrutiny over subcontractor practices.
