Boot-cleaning conservation project now complete at Baffin
Canadian cold-climate footwear and apparel brand Baffin has completed a project to set up 100 boot-cleaning stations for hikers on the Bruce Trail.
The main trail covers around 900 kilometres from Queenstown, near Niagara Falls, to Tobermory at the end of the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario.
Because the spread of invasive species of plants is one of the top threats to biodiversity in the region, Baffin decided in 2023 that it would set up 100 boot-cleaning stations along the route. The stations have brushes on which walkers can clean the soles of their boots, which may be carrying seeds of unwanted species of plants, before moving forward.
In April, for Earth Day 2025, Baffin employees teamed up with Bruce Trail Conservancy staff and volunteers to construct the final 40 boot-cleaning stations.
