Job losses hit Spanish leather and footwear industry

06/01/2025
The Spanish leather and footwear industry experienced a decline in 2024, losing 2,567 jobs, a 6.2% reduction compared to December 2023. By the end of the year, the sector employed 38,570 workers, falling below the 40,000 threshold and marking an 11.2% decrease (4,884 fewer workers) compared to December 2019, prior to the pandemic.

This decline contrasts with the overall Spanish labour market, which added over 500,000 jobs in 2024 and achieved the lowest unemployment levels in 17 years. While the sector recorded a month-on-month increase of 303 jobs in December, it has not regained the employment levels lost during the COVID-19 crisis.

Of those employed in the leather and footwear industry, 89.8% were part of the general Social Security scheme, with 10.2% self-employed. The workforce comprised 51.8% men and 48.2% women. The data reflects ongoing challenges for the sector despite broader improvements in the labour market.
