First American football footwear from New Balance comes to market

Sports shoe and apparel group New Balance officially launched its first footwear for American football at the end of June.

The company presented its first two models for the sport, Prodigy and Fortress, in Detroit in April at the National Football League’s annual player selection meeting.

It made these models available for sale in limited-edition colours at the end of June and said it would launch additional colours in mid-July.

It said “years of athlete insight” had gone into the making of Prodigy and Fortress.

The first of these, Prodigy (pictured), is engineered for skill-position players, New Balance said. The footwear allows athletes “to turn split-second reactions into game-changing plays”, it added. Features include a dual-injected plate with a focus on springing off the toe, making quick cuts, and accelerating. There are also T-shaped stud tips allow for multi-directional traction and turning.

For its part, the Fortress style features a more versatile design, built for “intense battles”, the sports brand said. It uses a multi-layer upper construction to provide midfoot containment and support for lateral stability. There is a dual-injection nylon and thermoplastic polyurethane plate to provide midfoot stability, with triangular-shaped lugs built for digging in.
