Primary data helps Equip improve its carbon footprint calculations
Outdoor group Equip, parent company of the Lowe Alpine and Rab brands, has reported a significant reduction in CO2 emissions in its 2024 sustainability report.
It has calculated emissions of 5.84 kilos of CO2-equivalent per item manufactured. Equip has said this represents a reduction of more than 45% compared to its 2019 baseline figures.
The company also said it had carried out extensive mapping of its fabric supply chain, which meant its calculations for its latest sustainability report have “benefitted from more accurate and robust primary data”, rather than relying on secondary data estimates.
This improved methodology, combined with lower production volumes and its use of existing fabric stock in 2023 led to significantly lower emissions than in previous years, it said.
Owner of the company, Matt Gowar, commented: “While the outdoor industry was struggling with continued inventory challenges, disrupted weather patterns and the impact of global conflicts, we took a chance to look internally to ensure we remain set up for the future. We know there is still a lot of work to do, so we are engaging our supply chain to influence a step-change.”
