EU approves new Ecodesign Rules
The European Council has approved a new "Ecodesign" framework to enhance the sustainability of products across the EU, alongside a ban on destroying unsold footwear and textiles, following the European Parliament's April approval.

Proposed by the European Commission in March 2022, the regulations aim to make products more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient. The framework empowers the Commission to establish ecodesign requirements for most products, emphasising durability, reusability, reparability, and resource efficiency. Exclusions apply to motor vehicles and defense-related products.

Additionally, the regulations introduce a "Digital Product Passport" to inform consumers and businesses about products' environmental sustainability. The ban on destroying unsold textiles and footwear will take effect two years after the regulation's enactment, with exemptions for small and micro companies and a six-year exemption for medium-sized companies.
