Fall in footwear exports hurts Bangladesh leather industry
Bangladesh’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) has reported that the country’s leather sector brought in export revenues of $794 million in the first nine months of the current financial year, the period from July 2023 to March 2024. This is a decline of 13.6% compared to the same months last year.
Finished leather exports did well, growing by 9.8% year on year to reach $102.4 million. There was also growth in the value of leathergoods exports, which reached $300.1 million, an increase of 2.7%.
The total was lower, however, because of a stark reduction in revenues from exports of leather shoes, which fell by more than 25% to just over $390 million.
