Lower-emission solution to scorching in PU foam

Chemicals group BASF has brought to market a new anti-scorch solution called Irgastab PUR 71.

It explained that in the manufacture of polyurethane foams, heat generated during the process can cause discoloration, loss of mechanical properties, and even present a fire hazard if the polyols, the main raw materials, are not properly stabilised.

BASF said that, while conventional anti-scorch packages rely on phenolic antioxidants combined with aromatic amine stabilisers, these come “with significant drawbacks”.

It added that because Irgastab PUR 71 is formulated without aromatic amine, it offers lower emissions and lower potential harm to humans and aquatic organisms.
