Trade union expresses concerns for shoe workers’ rights in Portugal
A Portuguese trade union, SNPIC, has issued a series of statements expressing concern about workers’ rights in the shoe industry in the country.
SNPIC, the National Union of Shoe Industry Professionals, has complained about being excluded from pay-deal negotiations with manufacturers’ association APICCAPS.
It said APICCAPS was negotiating a national pay deal behind closed doors. A different trade union organisation, SINDEQ, is involved in those discussions, but SNPIC insists that its rival offers only a low level of representation of footwear industry workers across Portugal.
It called on shoe factory workers across the country to join its efforts to make the discussions around a new national pay deal more open, with SNPIC being allowed to take part. SNPIC said it believed this was the best way to make sure hard-earned workers’ rights on pay, conditions and job security would be safe.
