National footwear support programme wins approval in Argentina
The authorities in Argentina have given parliamentary approval for a new promotions programme for the country’s footwear industry.
In mid-October, the politician who proposed the new support programme, Constanza Alonso, said she was delighted her idea had won approval in parliament and would become law.
She described footwear manufacturing as a key industry for the economic and social development of Argentina.
Ms Alonso (pictured) quoted industry sources who have calculated that between 2015 and 2019, footwear production in Argentina fell by 35%, while footwear imports into Argentina increased by 60% over the same timeframe.
She said this had led to the closure of more than 500 shoe factories and the loss of thousands of jobs. She insisted that the new law would help reverse this and boost the local manufacturers’ ability to claim a bigger share of the domestic market and grow their export business.
