Footwear-sector concerns prompt tariff announcement from Mexico
Mexico’s government has announced that tariff reductions on imported shoes will end next year and that, from October 1, 2024, companies importing footwear from countries with which Mexico has no free-trade agreement will face tariffs of 20% on each pair.
This news has come following complaints of falling revenues and job losses among footwear manufacturers in Mexico.
The main footwear industry body in the state of Guanajuato, CICEG, has said its member companies had to shed 2,100 jobs between November 2022 and May 2023.
CICEG said Mexico had imported a record volume of shoes from China in 2022, a total of 127 million pairs. In the first five months of this year, footwear imports from China reached a volume of 47 million pairs.
