Football coach joins Wolverine in skilled labour push

Footwear brand Wolverine has renewed its partnership with SkillsUSA, a partnership of students, teachers and businesses that work together to help people develop workplace skills.

As part of the programme the organisations are working on for 2023, Wolverine has arranged for American football coach Jim Harbaugh to speak to students at a SkillsUSA event on May 4 in Bay City, Michigan.

May 4 is known as ‘signing day’ in the US because, on that day, many high school students sign a letter of intent, committing to furthering their education by learning a trade.

Mr Harbaugh said he was happy to be part of the event. He added: “It is important to recognise and encourage those who are pursuing careers in skilled trades, in critical industries that keep our country running.”

Only 9% of high school students pursue careers in trades, Wolverine said in advance of the event, adding that this means “skilled labour is in short supply”.

The footwear brand has been working since 2014 to champion these skills through an initiative it calls Project Bootstrap.
