Further expansion at PrimeAsia Vietnam

16/03/2023

Leather manufacturing group PrimeAsia has announced a new expansion project at its tannery in  Ba Ria-Vung Tau province in southern Vietnam.

This expansion, which the company aims to complete in 2024, will increase the facility’s production capacity to 8 million square-feet of finished leather per month.

Before a previous expansion at the tannery, which began in 2015 and was formally completed in 2019, capacity was 4 million square-feet per month. That project increased capacity to 6 million square-feet per month right away and PrimeAsia said it expected the figure to increase further to around 7.5 million in the time that followed.

As part of the new expansion project, PrimeAsia Vietnam will add retanning and colouring capacity. It will develop a new retanning and colouring mezzanine at the tannery and will include eight new fully automated drums.

The current sample retanning and colouring area will be relocated to a newly constructed and purpose-built dedicated building.

Several other major equipment upgrades will also be part of the project, including the addition of a fourth pigment finishing line to support growing demand for athletic leathers, new drying and conditioning equipment, added equipment in the areas of splitting, shaving and buffing, and a significant upgrade to the wastewater treatment plant and solid waste handling technologies.

New equipment includes radio frequency drying technology from Cartigliano, which PrimeAsia has selected to be able to dry leather more uniformly, more quickly and with increased softness.

There will be a new product showroom and visitor centre to give customers an exclusive look at the latest leather collections.

“We are excited about this expansion project and the potential it holds for our company,” said chief executive, Jonathan Clark. “Our team has worked tirelessly to make this expansion a reality, and we look forward to continuing to provide our customers with exceptional leathers that are sustainably produced.”

He said PrimeAsia recognised the challenges and geographical risks that are part of today’s global supply chains and was working to mitigate risk and bring security of supply to customers.
