Footwear brands under investigation in Australia for greenwashing
Australia’s Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is to launch investigations into a number of businesses for potential greenwashing.
ACCC carried out web-based research of marketing claims and found that more than half the businesses it looked at were making “concerning claims about their sustainability practices”. It looked at almost 250 businesses; 57% made claims about which ACCC has raised questions.
Footwear and clothing brands were among those that had the highest proportion of concerning claims, ACCC said.
“A significant proportion of businesses are making vague or unclear environmental claims,” said ACCC deputy chair, Catriona Lowe. “This warrants further scrutiny.”
