Fashion designer Paco Rabanne died on February 3, two weeks short of his 89th birthday.

Paco Rabanne lived most of his life in France but was born near San Sebastián. He had a strong connection to the Basque city’s other famous designer, Cristóbal Balenciaga, with whom Paco Rabanne’s mother worked for many years as a dressmaker.

On moving to Paris in the 1950s, Paco Rabanne studied architecture but partly funded his studies by designing handbags, shoes and clothes. He began to produce full fashion collections of his own in 1966.

He retired in 1999.
