Footwear project update at Alcanena Green Week
The town of Alcanena, in which most of Portugal’s tanneries are located, is to hold a Green Week festival from October 23-29.
Among the leather industry’s contributions to Green Week will be a short but intense discussion forum on the sustainability challenges the leather sector faces. It will take place in the auditorium of leather research and testing centre CTIC in Alcanena on the afternoon of October 27.
There will be speakers from CTIC, from leather industry body APIC, from the local authority in Alcanena and from the national government’s industrial and economic development agency IAPMEI.
In the course of the afternoon, these speakers will address a whole range of topics, including “energy transition” in industrial environments, leather-specific environmental challenges, and current projects under development at CTIC (including projects to put tannery waste to good use, for example in fertilisers).
There will also be an update on a project called BioShoes4All, which, under the leadership of Portuguese industry body APICCAPS, aims to promote “the transition of the footwear industry to the circular economy”.
