During covid-19 lockdowns in Brazil, the country’s footwear brands experienced an unsurprising surge in online sales.

The market intelligence team at industry body Abicalçados has calculated that in 2020 online sales increased by almost 70% in 2020. It has said consumers’ changed shopping habits remained in place and that there was further increase, of 7.4%, in online footwear sales in 2021.

Abicalçados has calculated that 32.8% of all footwear sales in 2020 took place online. It has calculated e-commerce’s share for 2021 slightly lower, but still above 30% of the total.

Executive president, Haroldo Ferreira, has commented that ten years ago, e-commerce represented only 5.6% of sales in the sector. He said that any fear of online footwear purchases among Brazilian consumers had subsided.
