CTC launches traceability system from hide to finished leather
French leather and footwear research and testing body CTC presented a new system called ALIS at Tanning Tech in September. The Lyon-based organisation said the system would help maintain the traceability of hides during the tanning process.
This technology identifies the origin and reconstructs the route taken by the raw material throughout the tanning process, from hide to finished leather.
One component, ALIS Marking, uses a high power CO2 laser system to make a mark with a unique identification code for each animal inside the raw hide. It has been designed and patented to withstand the leather transformation process.
A second element, the ALIS Reading device, is based on a camera acquisition system and artificial intelligence algorithms. Information related to the quality and origin of each hide is automatically retained and stored in a database, allowing information to be shared across different sectors.
According to CTC, there are already nine French companies in the sector (slaughterhouses and tanners) that are using the ALIS traceability system.
