Umbro takes first strike with ProWeave
Sports brand Umbro has brought its all-new Velocita Alchemist football boots to market, as part of a deal with footwear materials developer Texon which allows it exclusive use of the latter’s patented ProWeave jacquard technology in the category until 2023.

Umbro’s use of ProWeave in boots marks the first time a sports company has done so, Texon said.

The technology delivers multi-directional, zonal stretch to requirements, weaving together various yarn thicknesses, weights and colours to create an adaptive, stable and breathable fit which functions “like a second skin”. It unites recycled polyester and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) yarns in a bee wing-like, “biomimicked” structure for added support.

Category director for footwear and equipment at the brand, Colin Lomas, credited use of ProWeave with a 35% reduction in energy during production when compared to conventional post-weave treatments, which he also suggested can result in unnecessary weightiness being added to football boots.

Incorporating TPU yarns has helped supply extra grip for improved ball control, spin and friction, the company added. Further, the upper is fully water-resistant, while the geometric stud design of Umbro’s own Pebax Powered Sprint+ outsole enables strong traction underfoot due to its even pressure distribution.

“We’re delighted Umbro has utilised ProWeave to such great effect in the Velocita Alchemist,” commented Texon’s business acceleration leader for the technology, Paul Jackson. “ProWeave transforms the way performance fabrics are made and how they look, feel and function. Creating different elasticity, tenacity and abrasion zones within the same weave, ProWeave helps brands bring new competitive, creative concepts to life.”
