New Balance goes Gore-Tex with 996s in Japan
Sports brand New Balance, headquartered in Boston, has released a twist on its classic men’s 996 sneaker, exclusive to Japan and notable for its incorporation of Gore-Tex textile technology.

The shoe, called the CM996X Gore-Tex, features a typical suede and mesh upper, however the unusual application of a Gore-Tex membrane – known for its lightweight, waterproof and breathable properties – below the surface broadens its suitability for all-weather conditions.

Use of the brand’s compression-moulded, dual-density C-Cap midsole, made from ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), adds a level of cushioning and stability. Meanwhile, this version of the heritage design, originally put into production in 1988, comes in two different colourways.

New Balance similarly launched MT1996, a new outdoor apparel and accessories range specifically geared towards the Japanese market, back in July.
