An organisation representing the commercial kangaroo industry, the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia (KIAA), has begun campaigns to promote kangaroo meat and leather in the US and Europe.

KIAA, which has leather and leather product manufacturers among its members, emphasises that kangaroo meat that is high in protein, low in fat and free from antibiotics and hormones. The animals live in the wild and do not end up in feedlots. The organisation has also calculated that the carbon footprint of kangaroos is about one-third of that of cattle.

Leather produced from kangaroo skins is one of the lightest, and strongest leathers tanners can produce. Its ultra-thin fibre structure is used extensively in the manufacture of premium soccer boots.

KIAA has called for designers to embrace and use kangaroo leather more widely in their collections.
