Pakistan’s Footwear Manufacturers Association (PFMA) has welcomed a government ban on importing high-end goods, including footwear, into the country.

The government announced the move at the end of May, saying it wanted to take urgent action to try to avoid running out of foreign reserves and control a hike in dollar prices against the rupee.

PFMA chairman, Zahid Hussain, said the ban was a long-awaited and much-needed step. He said a ban on imported footwear would boost local manufacturing and generate more employment in the country.
