Brazil’s footwear industry body, Abicalçados, has said shoe manufacturers across the country created a combined total of 17,800 new jobs in the first quarter of 2022.

This increase in jobs took the total number of people working in Brazil’s footwear manufacturing industry to 284,000 at the end of the quarter, an increase of 11.5% compared to a year ago.

Rio Grande do Sul, home to almost 30% of Brazil’s shoe producers, was the state that created the most footwear jobs during the quarter, with 6,100 new posts, followed by Bahia, Ceara and São Paulo.

The executive president of Abicalçados, Haroldo Ferreira, said jobs growth among member companies was a positive indication of industry activity picking up again, especially among producers of shoes for export markets.

He said export revenues in the first quarter were more than $320 million, an increase of 65% year on year.
