Indian leather sector breaks $1bn in exports to US
The chairman of India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE), Sanjay Leekha, has revealed that the country’s leather sector has achieved exports to the US with a value of $1 billion for the first time.
Mr Leekha shared the information, which relates to the financial year that has just ended (April 2021-March 2022), in comments he made at APLF 2022 in Dubai. He said the corresponding figure for the previous financial year was around $600 million.
He said: “Our numbers for the European Union are shrinking, but the US is now a big export market for us. There is, generally, a very positive, pro-India sentiment in buying countries now.”
The CLE chairman went on to say that he believes the Indian leather industry’s turnover will increase from around $12 billion in 2020 to $30 billion in 2025. He broke this down to exports of $10 billion and $20 billion from a vibrant domestic market.
