Brazilian footwear industry heralds year of recovery

24/03/2022

The CEO of the Brazilian association of footwear industries (Abicalçados) expects 2022 to be the “year of recovery” as shoe prices rise and the US looks to diversify its sourcing away from China.

Haroldo Ferreira said January and February exports were the best since 2011, with 27.57 million pairs exported for $209.2 million, a 40% increase in volume and a 70% increase in value.

The value was also 15% higher than in the comparative pre-pandemic period.

He said: “International demand is heated and there is a tendency, especially in the North American market, to migrate their footwear imports from China to Brazil, both due to the trade war between the two giants as well as the increase in freight cost from Asia and the need to diversify suppliers due to global uncertainties.”
