Leather-sector exports from India grow by one-third
India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has reported total export revenues for the sector of just under $4 billion for the first ten months of the current financial year, the period from April 2021 to January 2022.
This figure represents growth of 33% compared to the same months a year earlier.
CLE has stated that, if this trend continues, exports for the full year are likely to be close to $5 billion this year, which is more or less the same as for the financial year that ended in March 2020.
The figure for leather footwear was more than $1.6 billion, an increase of 40% year on year. Finished leather exports rose in value by 23.8% to reach $374 million for the 10-month period. There was also growth for export revenues from leather garments, rising by 14% to reach almost $300 million.
For leathergoods, there was an increase of 38%, with revenues just surpassing $1 billion. Finally, CLE said exports of saddlery and harness leather products were more than $225 million, which represents growth of 56% year on year.
