Lack of knowledge about leather comes as a surprise
A Leather UK-commissioned survey of 2,000 adults showed that only 24% of respondents were aware that hides or skins used to make leather are a by-product of the food industry that would otherwise go to waste.
Half of the people taking part said they though that cattle were bred specifically for leather. Once they were told the facts, 29% said this information would make them more likely to buy leather in the future.
The director of Leather UK, Kerry Senior, said respondents’ lack of knowledge regarding the origins of leather was surprising. He said that Leather UK put giving consumers better information at the heart of its role as a trade body.
