Texon joins TransFIRe consortium

Footwear component supplier Texon recently joined the TransFIRe (Transforming Foundation Industries Research and Innovation hub) consortium.

The UK-based association comprises 20 academics from 12 universities, over 60 companies and 14 non-governmental organisations linked to the foundation industries - chemicals, cement, ceramics, glass, metals and paper - which reportedly together make up 75% of all materials in the UK economy, plus produce roughly 10% of the nation’s carbon dioxide emissions.

Texon’s director of new product development and introduction, marketing and sustainability, Boyd Mulder, commented that the company sees joining TransFIRe as one route to reducing its own environmental footprint.

Mr Mulder pointed to how the company publicly declared its ambition to achieve “zero waste” by 2025. “As a global team, we are working hard to cut our carbon footprint by 50%, reduce our use of virgin materials by 50%, recycle and reuse 90% of our waste and reduce our water use and water waste by 20%,” he expanded.

By joining the consortium, Texon will be able to access its recommendations for environmental best practice across manufacturing, as well as share in the creation of new materials and process opportunities. In addition, it will help support communities located next to the foundation industries to co-develop new business and social enterprises.
