William Wong warns that 99% of shoes end up in landfill

The 2021 Global Footwear Sustainability Summit will take place in Shanghai from October 21-23.
Presentations and discussions at the event will focus on a range of subjects including chemicals, materials, manufacturing technology, upcycling and ‘green’ finance for sustainable footwear initiatives.
Founder of the event and former vice-president of the Hong Kong Footwear Association, William Wong, said in the build-up to the summit that he hoped professionals from across the industry would take part to help build a more sustainable industry.
“We produce and consume 24 billion pairs of shoes each year,” Mr Wong said, “and more than 99% of these shoes ended up in landfills, if not rivers and oceans.”
