Rwanda could build industrial park for leather
Officials at Rwanda’s ministry of trade and industry have said the government wants to establish an industrial park for the leather sector at Bugesera, 40 kilometres south of the country’s capital, Kigali.
They have calculated that at least 100 manufacturing companies in Rwanda are currently involved in producing shoes and leathergoods for the domestic market, but these companies have complained about a lack of local hides, the high cost and low quality of the domestic hides that are available, and delays involved in importing hides from Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and China.
To make it easier for these companies to use Rwandan leather in their production, the government aims to invest in the new industrial zone.
Rwanda currently has a cattle population of around 1.5 million head, as well as 2.8 million goats and 600,000 sheep.
