Press in Ethiopia have reported revivals of a plan for leather city in Modjo, including a ‘state of the art tannery’ complex.

The Modjo leather hub could cost around $200 million and create 30,000 jobs, according to the report in the Ethiopian Herald.

Ministry of Trade and Industry State Minister Teka Gebreyesus said: "Ethiopia plans to make Modjo town of Oromia State the hub for leather industry and envisions to attract anchor companies' involvement thereby transforming the town into one of the state-of-the-art tannery centres in Africa.”

Plans were first announced in 2014, and were boosted in 2019 when it was reported the state company that runs industrial parks had purchased 290 hectares of land on which the leather cluster would be built.

Ethiopia will host the XXXVI IULTCS Congress and the fifth World Leather Congress in Addis Ababa from November 1-5.
