Tokyo-based Japan HealthCare was founded in 2017 by Dr Daichi Okabe, one of only a small number of podiatrists working in Japan. It develops custom-made insoles with a view to using them to help prevent musculoskeletal disorders such as knee and lower-back pain.
The system Dr Okabe has developed is based on photos of the feet that people can take on their phones. It uses details in the photos to build personalised insoles for its customers. The start-up says the insoles support wearers by stabilising the body. It won the grand prize in the most recent ASICS Accelerator Programme, which concluded in February.
