Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) has announced the winners for China of its 2021 student design competition. LHCA organised the competition in partnership with the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA).

More than 400 students at seven participating universities in different parts of China took part in the competition. Two leather manufacturing groups, Xingye Leather Technology and Henan Prosper, sponsored the competition. Research and development manager at Belle International brand Staccato, Zhenjun Yu, headed up the judging panel.

Gold winners in each of the competition’s three categories were: Zhen Wang, Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, for footwear; Yuying Gan, Tsinghua University, for garments; and Shanshan Yang, Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, for accessories.

CLIA chairman, Yuzhong Li, said the design competition had inspired a love of leather among young designers. He said it had made him confident China’s leather and leather fashion industries had a bright future.

President of LHCA, Stephen Sothmann, said: “I am strongly encouraged by the creativity and passion for leather the Chinese students demonstrated in our first student design competition. We hope young designers will continue to use leather and promote its beauty, versatility and sustainability.”

LHCA is running similar student design competitions in Italy, the UK and Taiwan.
