India: leather-sector exports fall by one-third

The Indian leather industry has reported a fall of one-third in its export revenues for the first nine months of the current fiscal year, the period from April to December 2020. Its export earnings for the period for $2.6 billion. For the same months in the previous financial year, the figure was $3.9 billion.

According to the industry’s main representative body in India, the Council for Leather Exports (CLE), finished leather exports fell in value by 36.4% to $263.4 million.

Leather footwear’s export revenues were down by 35.4% to just over $1 billion. The figure for leather garments showed a decline of 32.1% to $231.6 million, while for leathergoods there was a fall of 36.3% to $673.6 million.
