World Leather launches update of Nothing To Hide

29/01/2021

Seven years after launching the Nothing To Hide essays explaining why people make and use leather and how the industry works, World Leather is now updating the series.

The essays, 15 in total, ran in the magazine between 2014 and 2016 and have been available since then at nothing-to-hide.org under an open-source agreement, for journalists, universities, companies and consumers all over the world to use.

Starting in early 2021, World Leather has begun updating the series and the first part of this, a new version of essay one, appears in the December 2020-January 2021 issue of the magazine.

This first essay covers hide and skin production around the world, now with updated statistics on the volume of this material that the global meat and dairy sectors generate each year.

The essay argues that the leather industry does society a great service by taking this material and converting it into leather for shoes, accessories, clothing and upholstery. Important economic, social and environmental benefits accrue from this, and tanners and finished leather product brands should remind customers of this in the face of questions about sustainability.

Updated versions of other essays in the series will follow in future issues of the magazine.
