Danish project results in shoes made from traceable leather

Denmark-based footwear company Roccamore has become the first brand to work with Spoor, a new spin-off from wet blue producer Scan-Hide, to offer traceable shoes.

At the end of 2019, Scan-Hide said it was close to being able to bring to market  a laser-technology based system for marking and identifying hides. Spoor, which launched in September 2020, is the result of that.

For a new Roccamore collection called Traceability, Spoor has supplied carefully chosen hides, each one laser-identified to capture details about its origin, all the way back to the farm.

Each shoe in the Traceability collection will have a quick-response code printed on the inside, which consumers will be able to scan to find out “the full backstory” of the individual animal from which the leather came. The animal’s country of origin, breed and birthplace will all be revealed.

Roccamore is the brainchild of Danish designer Frederikke Antonie Schmidt. She studied at the Polimoda design school in Florence and has used her contacts in Tuscany to find footwear manufacturing partners there to make her shoes and boots.

She has described the Traceability collection as combining the quality of Scandinavian hides with the know-how and Italian handcraft, while offering full traceability of the leather as extra detail.

Spoor said: “With this launch we can demonstrate how brands can make use of the traceability insight we are able to deliver with our premium hides.”
