Pandemic provides unexpected boost for made-to-measure

Footwear industry commentators in Italy have noticed an unexpected trend emerging from the covid-19 crisis: a boost for bespoke shoes.

Many Italian towns and cities still have independent artisans offering made-to-measure shoes, often at prices that compare favourably with higher-end factory-made footwear.
More consumers than before are being attracted to them for two main reasons.

The first is that the pandemic and lockdowns have made many people aware of the need to support local retailers and other businesses.

And from a style point of view, the halt in travel and, for many, even in going to the office every day, has brought a new focus on products that will last for a long time, rather than on styles for a couple of seasons.
