La Rioja partners use plasma technology to improve sole-upper adhesion
CTCR, the specialist footwear technology centre for manufacturers in La Rioja in northern Spain, has teamed up with researchers at the nearby University of La Rioja to develop a new method of cementing shoe uppers and soles together.
According to CTCR, the new technique is more sustainable, safer, more efficient and delivers an improvement in adhesion of 110% compared to conventional methods.
It said the technology works particularly well in shoes with soles made from styrene-butadiene rubber and nitrile rubber.
Using plasma technology, the research teams were able to achieve a high level of adhesion between soles and uppers without using any halogenated solvents.
